The Mutual theme for 2017, announced by the General Young Men & Women Presidencies is:
If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not, and it shall be given him. But let him, ask in faith, nothing wavering, for he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed. – James 1: 5-6
Behind the Design
When I heard this year’s theme, I was both excited and a little perplexed. This scripture is huge in our church because of it’s association with the Joseph Smith, but I wanted to capture the essence of the scripture without over doing the tie to this key event for our Church. As I read through the press release announcement for the theme, I loved that the General Presidencies were choosing to emphasize prayer. The more I thought about it the more I realized that prayer covers a whole lot more than just getting a testimony of the Gospel. And that’s when the design ideas started to really flow.
This year’s kits all have something to do with growth – it’s inevitable really, with prayer, our relationship with our Heavenly Father, our testimony, our knowledge of the Gospel, and our ability to overcome trials all flourish. You’ll definitely see this with the bright value colored florals, and the simple sprouts and natural elements woven into each kit.
Another goal I had while designing this year, was to create a print of the theme that could easily be hung in the home. I wanted something that worked well for Young Women (the Grey and White Floral options that include pops of the Value Colors), but also something that carried a little bit more sophistication with muted tones.

The older my kids get, the more I realize and work to have things that we’re discussing in Church being parallel taught at home. My guess is that other families are doing the same and having a reminder that blends with their home decor is a great way to help put this theme in front of the youth.
And despite the muted tones and fancy fonts of some of the designs, I think this year’s designs can easily communicate with the young Primary-aged children in our homes – I know my kids have already asked and recounted to me why the sprout in the blue pot ties into prayer and the James 1:5-6 verse (secretly I’m fist-pumping over this, and have plans to get them to memorize the scripture as well, although it might take us a few months to do it).
One of the final goals I tried to accomplish this year in designing the 2017 theme kits was to include a more masculine option. I’ve heard from many of you that you use your scripture board when you meet with the Young Men. Over the next few weeks, the print with the arrow will be available in a wide variety of colors and select poster sizes. It would be perfect for the young man in your life and also a great home decor piece if you’re crushing on the simplicity of the design and those trendy arrows.
