Lesson No. 3 – Turning Hearts Through Family History
Learning Question: What is Family History? Why is it important?
Song: Family History, I Am Doing It
Video: The Purpose of Family
Why are families so important?
Use this question to start a discussion about your own family and how it benefits each family member. Families are important because we are all part of God’s family. To be able to return to Him, we must have saving ordinances that are accomplished inside His holy house, or the temple.
Do you know who you are?
Dean R. Burgess, then a Young Men General Presidency member said,
Knowing who you are makes you spiritually strong, sound, and steadfast in your priesthood duties. You become confident with faith and determination to make right decisions. You have courage to stand up for what you know is right. You realize that it is a privilege to hold the priesthood of God and have the authority to act in His name.
Knowing your ancestors and their stories helps you know who you are. It reminds you to live righteously. It is also important to know that we are sons and daughters of God. He wants us to be like Him, and to return to live with Him. Knowing who we are is vital to our becoming the person God intended us to be.
Activity – Fan Charts & Family Trees
The files for the Fan Chart and Family Trees are included in the link below. You might want to encourage youth who are old enough to go to the temple to do Family History work and prepare names to be taken to the temple for baptism. Consider sharing a story from your own family line and how it has influenced you. What traits do you see in your own family that might be passed down from a relative?
