This year’s theme, announced by the General Young Men & Women Presidencies is:
Wherefore, ye must press forward with a steadfastness in Christ, having a perfect brightness of hope, and a love of God and of all men. Wherefore, if ye shall press forward, feasting upon the word of Christ, and endure to the end, thus saith the Father: Ye shall have eternal life. – 2 Nephi 31:20
The Design Story
Whenever I design, I usually start by sketching out several different ideas. At least one of these ideas, fades out in the initial rounds- it just doesn’t seem to click or I find myself uninterested in pursuing it further. Two or three options, always make it to the end of the design process. Sometimes they share similar design components, sometimes they don’t, but they always have a distinctly different look and feel.
When I design for clients, I present all these options and we meet to discuss how each of them could promote their brand and/or message they’re working to communicate to their audience. I hardly ever admit it to clients, but I always have a personal favorite. When I design for my shop, I find that one design always sticks out (it usually is my favorite one) and that’s usually the option I choose to push through production and release for sale.
This year’s theme provided me with only two initial design ideas. I started working hoping that more ideas would come to mind so I could flush them out as well. But they never did. The two design ideas were very different, they shared a color scheme and font choices, but other than that look of each was decidedly unique. I didn’t have a favorite. I love them both, and here’s why.
Over the past year, I’ve talked to quite a few young women and even more of their leaders. I’ve heard things like “trendy colors and patterns”, “something cool and not obviously churchy”, “I can’t put that in my locker or have it as my cellphone wallpaper”, and the hardest vote to decide “florals or no florals”. So when I started this year, I thought long and hard about how to express the theme to cover all these bases. I’m not positive that I’ve succeeded, but I’m fairly sure I’ve come close – and I’m so excited to give you a look at 2 great designs that you can mix and match – to your girl’s personal tastes, and also to the look and feel of your Young Women’s program. (And yes, there are big trendy florals for those that love them, and right on trend icons that stand for something but that don’t carry the fluff of the traditional girly stuff.)

The icons fit the scripture perfectly. Sunshine – perfect brightness of hope / Heart – love of God and of all men / Arrow – press forward / Scriptures – feasting upon the word of Christ / Finish line – endure to the end / Temple outline – ye shall have eternal life. I have a couple of ideas brewing that will incorporate the icons even more and I can’t wait to release these in the weeks to come.
But the part I love the most – these two looks mesh with each other – so you can use them both for your New Beginnings, Young Women in Excellence, or whenever you introduce the new theme. Or you can separate them and have 2 different looks to choose from or to use for more than one event (the basic event decor taken care of for 2 events – win!)
